ACES for Audio-Visual Restorers
An Introduction with an Ounce of OpenEXR and OpenColorIO

Abstract

An ACES presentation from the restorer’s perspective, with many examples taken from our daily work, followed by an informal Q&A session.

This is an advanced course: the attendee should be familiar with high-school maths; we’ll delve into power functions and logarithms from there.

Content includes:

• Cinematic colours – we’ll also discuss the additive Dufaycolor and the subtractive Gasparcolor;
• improving the restoration workflow with ACES (Academy Color Encoding Specification);
• implementing and using OpenEXR and OpenColorIO (OCIO) for the colour management;
• establishing, documenting and preserving the creative intent of audio-visual legacy.

Your Guidance

• Friday 6 June 2014, from 14:00 to 17:00, at our company AV Preservation by reto.ch in Écublens (a suburb of Lausanne, Switzerland).
• The admission is free, but an inscription is required, as the places are limited to eight restorers, as well as scholars and colourists.
• All information gathered at this encounter could be used, without further notice, for our training courses, including the master course Conservation et restauration de l’audiovisuel and the seminar Beyond Black and White: Additive Colour Systems.
• In the evening an optional dinner is organised.

Presenter

Having graduated in mathematics and computer science, Reto Kromer became involved in audio-visual conservation and restoration as early as 1986. From 1998 to 2003 he was head of preservation at the Swiss National Film Archive. Since 2004 he has been running his own preservation company, AV Preservation by reto.ch. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Lausanne, the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and on AMIA’s Board of Directors.
