רטו קרומר • Reto KromerHaving graduated in both mathematics and computer science, Reto Kromer became involved in audio-visual conservation and restoration forty years ago. He runs his own preservation company, AV Preservation by reto.ch, and is also a visiting lecturer at the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. His courses cover the conservation and restoration not only of audio-visual content but also of audio-visual carriers, usually with a focus on related technical issues to those, and motion picture film. The research projects he currently leads focus primarily on the digital domain and include colour spaces, look-up tables, codecs and emulation, as well as methods for the recovery of actual files and the so-called raw data they contain. Previously he was head of preservation at the Cinémathèque suisse (the Swiss National Film Archive) as well as a lecturer at the University of Lausanne and the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola in Donostia (San Sebastián). He served as a board member of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) for four years. His work has seen him honoured with one of the inaugural Joint Technical Symposium (JTS) Awards and a SMPTE James A. Lindner Archival Technology Medal. Part of his leisure time is devoted to study and teaching Medieval, Western and Italo-Yiddish as well as other rare Jewish languages, including some varieties of northern Judeo-Italian such as Judeo-Venetian, Judeo-Lombard and Judeo-Piedmontese. 2026-02-16 |
