Before the Restoration

Lesson delivered on 30 June 2017 in the «Focus on Restoration» section of Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, Italy.

Abstract

What is needed before the restoration can even begin, in order to make available the best possible file? A little about ethics, the main part about preparation and digitisation of the «originals», a little about further conservation of the sources.

Ressources

The presentation’s slides (PDF, 2.0 MB).

The idea was to project on the big screen the data as generated by a three-CCD sensor and a Bayer-based sensor, as well as the data modified through the different steps until the so-called raw data can be delivered by the camera to a software. Unfortunately, at the last moment, the presenter has not been allowed to plug-in his own laptop, and therefore this projection had to be canceled.
