Before the Restoration

Lesson delivered on 30 June 2017 in the «Focus on Restoration» section of Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, Italy.

What is needed before the restoration can even begin, in order to make available the best possible file? A little about ethics, the main part about preparation and digitisation of the «originals», a little about further conservation of the sources.

The idea was to project on the big screen the data as generated by a three-CCD sensor and a Bayer-based sensor, as well as the data modified through the different steps until the so-called raw data can be delivered by the camera to a software. Unfortunately, at the last moment, the presenter has not been allowed to plug-in his own laptop, and therefore this projection had to be canceled.

Having graduated in mathematics and computer science, Reto Kromer became involved in audio-visual conservation and restoration more than thirty years ago. He was head of preservation at the Swiss National Film Archive, and lecturer at the University of Lausanne and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

He has been running his own preservation company, AV Preservation by, and lecturing at the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Stanford University. His current research includes colour spaces, look-up tables and codec programming and emulation.
